One man’s meat is another man’s poison. However, one man’s social media network may drive him to insanity.
The world of social media is vast and sometimes very frustrating.
Do you log into Facebook right away when you wake? How long does it take to send your first tweet after opening your eyes? All it takes is a blink and you realize that it is now lunchtime and you’ve not done a thing to build your business or brand.
Social media is a tool for communication – that’s it. Just like any other tool, it can be overused and detrimental to your goals if used improperly.
Now is the time to come up with a plan. Build your online brand with the free social media tools you have in front of you – without wasting hours a day and having nothing to show for it.
Social media communications should take no more than 1 hour a day.
- Research your social media networks and choose 2 that provide the biggest payout. This can be brand building, conversion or fruitful networking. (No, your mom, cousin and sister do not count towards networking.)
- Understand your goals, time and personality online. What are you trying to convey? What is the outcome you are seeking?
- Communicate with the goal in mind. Don’t flood people with trivial communications. All posts to social media networks need to be meaty and start a conversation. You’re building authority and, unless you are a liquor company, telling the world what you drank at the bar last night is not going to build the right type of authority.
Don’t feel overwhelmed or frustrated. Remember that social media networks are not a “one-size-fits-all”. Just because someone else is posting pictures of their dog or the fact that they’ve checked into Foursquare, doesn’t mean you should. The goals are key!
1 Hour. 1 Goal. 1 Brand.
